Assignments

21F.102 meets four times a week for 13 weeks, for a total of 52 class-hours (of 50 minutes each). In the following schedule, assignments are listed in sequence (Day 1, Day 2, etc.), one for each day of class (with intervening days ignored); cf. the calendar.

Abbreviations

Assignments make reference to sections as, eg: Unit 5.10, Chars 6.2.1; and to exercises as, eg: Unit 7 ex 3, Chars 4 exs 3 and 4.

A Note on the First Test

The first test on day 8 will cover Chinese 1 material, Unit 5 through section 3, and Chars 4. Chars 4 introduces 4 sets of characters (roughly 50 in all), and includes some special topics. Each of the four sections that introduces the character sets follows a sequence of steps: first, each character written large with notes on its form; then the new characters are illustrated in compounds and phrases, then in readings and finally, there is an exercise. Some students like to forge ahead of the schedule, then consolidate; others prefer a slow but steady approach. Either way is fine, so long as you manage to get through the material before the 8th day.

SES #TOPICS
Material for Test 1
1-2Review and Recovery

The first two days will be devoted to administrative and curricular matters (such as the syllabus and the Web site, etc.), to reviewing material covered in Chinese 1, and to getting started on Chars 4. You should prepare Chars 4.0 by day 3 (Thursday); it offers some review of Chars 1-3. For days 2 and 3, you should also start reviewing Unit 4 conversational material (from Chinese 1), particularly the 'Dialogue on the bus to Mianyang' (4.10). Chinese 2 students should be able to access the Chinese 1 Web site if needed.
3Work on the first set of Chars 4 (4.1), examining the characters in large font with the notes that follow, then trying to learn to recognize them by doing 4.1.1 (compounds), 4.1.2 (reading) and exercise 1 (no writing – just prepare it so you can do it fluently in class). Review Units 4 and Unit 3 from the summaries, which have been collected into one document (PDF).
4Consolidate Chars 4.1 and move ahead to 4.2, following the same routine. Type out Chars 4 exercise 2 in connected pinyin. (It's okay to write characters too, of course, but better if you know how to type them.) Review Unit 3 and Unit 2.
5Consolidate Chars 4, sets 1 and 2, then go on to set 3, doing exercise 3. Begin Unit 5, by practicing the tone contrasts in 5.1 (with an mp3 in the study materials section) and the 'or' patterns in 5.2 and 5.3, which is the dialogue involving odd and even numbers that you have been practicing at the beginning of class recently.
6Continue with the last set in Chars 4 (4.4), writing out exercise 4; then look ahead to the examples of business cards in 4.5. Type out Unit 5, exercise 1 ('or').
7Review Chars 4 and do exercise 5. The first test, on day 8 (Tuesday) covers Chinese 1 material and Chars 4 – reading only – and through Unit 5.3.
8Review Chinese 1 material. Make sure you remember how to write the material in pinyin, with correct tones. Review Chars 4 and Unit 5 through 5.3.
