This class examines the processes of drug development. The course is multidisciplinary and is taught by faculty members from the Engineering Systems Division, Chemical Engineering, Biology, the Sloan School of Management, and the Health Sciences and Technology program. Featured guest lecturers are from industry and other relevant areas. Class participation is key; each session begins with a discussion of current events in the pharmaceutical industry. Class sessions generally include one academic presentation and one industry presentation.
There is no single textbook for the class, but a substantial selection of journal articles, news items, and white papers are listed in the readings section.
The course culminates in a group project consisting of a paper and presentation. The topic of the project is a drug discovery related question in the context of a disease of the students' choice. A few groups are selected to present their project during the last session of the class. More details are available in the projects section.
