Education chief wants more aid

State Education Commissioner John King asked lawmakers for $98 million more in school aid, warning that school districts are struggling to stave off insolvency.

King asked for a 3.5 percent increase in state school aid next year — or $709 million — up from Gov. Andrew Cuomo's proposed 3 percent — or $611 million — at an education funding hearing Tuesday with members of the state Assembly and Senate.
