Michael Gottfredson, dressed in a muted green suit, speaks in a whisper-soft voice.

But he does not equivocate when describing his No. 1 job as president of the University of Oregon: Raising money.

Gottfredson, who will be formally installed as president today after 10 months on the job, says a lack of money is the overarching problem on his campus and others.

So he plans to lobby Congress, seek sway in Salem and, more than anything else, court alumni and other potential donors to give....
