    The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) at Penn State is seeking an Operations Engineer to join our operations team. As an engineer on our operations team, you will be an integral contributor to a fast-paced operations team, supporting Penn State investment in research cyberinfrastructure. Penn State’s elite researchers use our high-performance computing resources to solve real-world problems by conducting simulations, data analysis, machine learning, and other research using high-performance computing.

    Responsibilities of this position include:

    Helping manage, monitor, maintain and automate ICDS systems and supporting infrastructure.

    Work with members of the operations, engineering, and development teams as we update processes and workflows in support of our dev-ops processes.

    Work with users and other ICDS staff to understand limitations and develop engineered solutions to overcome those system limitations.

    Debug complex problems involved with limitations of scaling applications and workflows in a high-performance computing and storage environment.

    You will have the opportunity to investigate system problems and work to provide innovative solutions that provide information to users and ICDS staff to enhance their ability to understand, debug and improve our high-performance research infrastructure.

    Education and Experience:

    This position may be filled at a level 1 or 2 depending on the candidate selected.

    Level 1: Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline

    Level 2: Typically requires a Bachelors degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline and 2+ years of related experience.

    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

    The successful candidate will:

    need to be proactive and be able to contribute as we develop plans, schedules, requirements, and documentation for system enhancements and as we resolve problems

    have the ability to communicate clearly

    work as a member of a team in a collaborative environment and actively contribute to completion of team goals and assigned tasks.

    collaborate with team members, scientific users, and vendors to determine the source of problems and resolve them

    assist in developing engineering methods to proactively monitor and enhance ICDS systems to improve system performance and stability

    help create and update system and operational documentation

    Desired qualifications include:

    Work in a Linux environment, including command-line tools editing files etc.

    Write scripts using Bash and at least one other common Linux scripting language such as Python, Perl, Ruby etc.
