  • Job Summary
    IU Libraries seeks a dynamic, self-motivated, technology-curious professional to fulfill the position of DevOps Engineer. The position will be focused on the Avalon Media System application, which is based on the Samvera / Fedora software stack, collaborating with staff in the IU Libraries, other departments at IU, and at other institutions, playing a lead role in DevOps functions of local and community projects.

    As part of the Avalon Media System team, the position is responsible for:

    Collaborating with other team members in the development of the Avalon Media System.

    Designing, implementing, and maintaining tools and installation packages for deployment of Avalon in a locally-hosted environment, for distribution with the open source Avalon Media System software.

    Evaluating and selecting deployment automation tools.

    Developing scripts to support automated application deployment and upgrade.

    Creating virtual machine or container images.

    Contributing to the Avalon Media System release process.

    Deploying and monitoring multiple Avalon instances in a variety of platforms.

    Providing system administration for Avalon Media System, including setting up Avalon instances for new institutions.

    Planning and implementing upgrades of Avalon for multiple institutional users.

    Monitoring systems and applications for potential problems, security vulnerabilities, and intrusion attempts.

    Working with cloud service providers, IU IT security staff, and others to ensure security of all Avalon systems.

    Heading the evaluation, testing, and recommendation of cloud hosting options.

    Maintaining our cloud deployment architecture up to date, incorporating new technologies when applicable.

    Required Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree and two years of experience in network and server administration, scripting, and/or software development.

    Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.

    Experience in programming of complex software systems using Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, and web services. Experience managing Apache web server software and Passenger or Tomcat web applications containers, network and application security, application development, and deployment best practices. The ability to support related infrastructure such as continuous integration, monitoring, version control, automated builds, virtual machine environments, Docker containers, the Terraform infrastructure-as-code software tool, and cloud-based services.

    Experience with digital repository technologies, including Samvera, Fedora, and Blacklight, and experience with library systems strongly desired. Experience with agile development methodologies, particularly Scrum, highly desired. Experience working with digital image, audio, and video formats also highly desired.

    Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with developers, other technical staff, subject matter experts, and users. Experience working in a Unix/Linux environment. Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.

    Working Conditions / Demands
    This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

    Many systems require continuous operation/high availability and 24 × 7 × 365 support. As such, the DevOps Engineer must be able to maintain a flexible work schedule.
