One of the main aims of college education is to help students develop an independent and thinking mind. To achieve this objective, colleges organize seminars, lectures and discourses where students can discuss and debate their views about different subjects.
Science Alone Cannot Provide All The Answers
One such popular topic of discussion and debate is whether science and religion are compatible. This has been a hot topic for years and discussing it has opened up new questions which lead to fresh debates.
Some feel that science can explain the origin of the world. Those who believe in this point of view argue that it is not some superior power but the Big Bang Theory that is responsible for the beginning of the universe.
The scientific reason for life on earth is evolution and not God. But while science can find answers to most of the myriad questions and problems, it cannot alone explain how life upon earth came into existence.
It cannot completely explain why certain incidents happen in our lives. For instance most of us have experienced some miracle in our lives which reveal the presence of some superior power.
Belief In Both Science And Religion Is Essential
On the other hand, those who believe that it is not science but religion which has the answers to all the questions in our lives are equally wrong since science is integrally connected to our lives.
Even in the primitive times science was used to make things happen. Cave men rubbed stones together to make fire. If we suffer from an illness and only resort to prayers to heal us, that would be plain foolishness.
Nevertheless the question “are science and religion compatible” has attracted a lot of heated arguments and many educated and intelligent minds have spent their entire life searching for the answer to this question. So much so that “The relation between religion and science” has been a separate subject of study in college education.
As young, educated minds, we would like to have logical and scientific reasons for everything but we must remember that in spite of all the scientific discoveries, some questions still remain unanswered.
Faith in both religion and science is necessary to understand the intricacies of life.
