  • The higher education scenario in the country has been on a rather see-saw ride in the past few years. While every now and then positive news seems to creep up, it is more or less dominated by another negative development.

One such recent development suggests that majority of teachers are now left with no other option but to look for multiple jobs due to low pay scale. The average income of teachers is around $56,000 annually. Obviously, in an economy where stability seems to be a distant dream, this income is not sufficient enough.

This is one of the major reasons why teachers are now looking for alternatives. Infact, many of them have already got themselves a job after college and university hours. According to many educational experts and former teachers, there could be nothing sadder than this for any economy.

The data also reveals that teachers tend to get married and settle down faster as compared to individuals belonging to other professions. It stated that while 45 percent of individuals falling into professions other than teaching preferred to remain single, only 35 percent of teachers went ahead with the same views, while remaining 65 percent are already married and have dependents.

This has made the situation even more difficult for many teachers. The responsibility of taking care of the dependents is something that is eating on them day in day out and have not left them with any other option but to look for a non-teaching job once their teaching hours are done and dusted.

President Obama had recently stated that his administration would like to offer extra bonus to the teachers. A bonus of about $20,000 was being considered to be given out to teachers apart from their total annual earnings. However, administrators and former teachers believe that the government will have to do a lot more if they are looking to improve the education system further and also improve on the quality of education.

Unfortunately, at this moment, many budding teachers are backing away due to lack of payment. This is only making the situation worse as our students are deprived of good quality education. The universities and colleges have no option but to select rather average individuals as teachers.  Many administrators believe that this is a vicious cycle which can create a lot of damage if things are not taken into control immediately.

By looking into the matter and increasing the payment, America would be doing a great favor upon herself. The higher education situation is already on the edge at the moment. In such a scenario, it only makes sense that a concrete initiative is taken in this regard and teachers are backed up financially.

With Mr. Obama having won the elections yet again, many experts are hoping that a long term solution is going to come up in the days to come. Until then, we can only keep our fingers crossed and pray for the teachers.
