  • Grants come as a blessing to the crumbling education system

  • Recently it was stated that the Teach for America is one of the most popular initiatives in which students across universities want to go places. They are known to recruit elite college students so that these students can help teach in public schools. They also get a chance to teach at the KIPP foundation which is a huge network of charter schools. This network is now the winner of the $650 million grant from the federal government.

Each and every group within this charter has been awarded $50 million while two more groups won larger grants as they were backed with evidence of student’s success far more than the other schools.

Forty nine million dollars was awarded to the Success for All Foundation that has been helping various elementary schools to bounce back. The Ohio State University won $46 million dollars to train 3500 plus teachers for the reading recovery approach that further helped the first grade students.

Remaining $455 million was awarded in smaller amounts to 45 other groups in the non profit sector and schools in various districts. Overall, about 1700 groups had applied for such grants.

In the current state of the education system, such grants come in as a blessing. Of course, the grant will be revoked if the schools and the organisations fail to fulfil their promises. Currently the education system in America is facing many issues. Even as President Obama has taken the initiative to standardise tests across the nation, many states do not want to adhere to it.

There are issues like no jobs for immigrant students or work permit for kids who come to America to study and lack of funds for schools and universities. These issues are just wreaking more and more havoc in the current American education system. Every state is facing some issue that can be best understood by the local government. Even though the government wants to help make amends, some do not want to relent.

Teachers are being suspended and their jobs are being terminated due to the discrepancies caused in the scoring system which show that if the students cannot score much, the teaching is not being impactful. And in the fear of being asked to leave, some schools have resorted to tampering with tests. In short the situation is grim.

Not only is there lack of funds and other requirements, but the entire education system needs a revamp and that too at the earliest. This is because the more time taken to get everyone settled in; the students will lose out on valuable study and knowledge.

This problem is extended at the university and college level as well. So far no idea has seemed to emerge and work out completely. However, we do know for a fact that the government is taking serious measures and hopefully, it would all work out in the interest of the citizens of America.

It is now a wait and watch game.
