Women’s studies department at the University of Michigan is an inter-disciplinary program founded in the year 1973. This department is one of the most mature and strong women’s studies departments in the country.

Using feminist teaching, research and social activism, this diverse intellectual community is dedicated to enhancing quality and excellence in its capacity as an inter disciplinary academic unit in the college of science, literature and arts. A comprehensive range of social sciences, humanities, law, health and medicines are represented by at least 30 efficient faculty members.

Activities such as pursuing feminist scholarships, serving committees, providing useful advice to graduate and under graduate students, team teaching and cross listing of courses is carried out by a group of additional faculty at the university.

The aim is to bridge a national, religious, economic, racial and gender divides by building collaborations at inter disciplinary level through activism, curriculum and scholarships. Other endeavours include merging communities to university through social justice promotion and creating innovative and interesting new knowledge forms.

From the time this department was initiated at the University of Michigan, there has been great effort to integrate feminist practice and theory. In order to foster social transformation through ethical reflection and effectively comprehend circumstances of historical importance and shaping social injustice, activism and scholarship were considered to be of paramount importance by Women’s studies even before community outreach activities commenced at the academy. This has led to an in depth understanding of the reasons why social inequality or reproduction is resisted by communities and individuals.
Feminist research is emboldened, grounded and inspired by activism and the process of social change and coalition can be understood through rigorous research made possible through scholarships.

Service learning experiences and feminist practices are consistently rated among their undergraduate education’s beneficial components by students at the Women’s Studies.  We are able to understand in depth the ways in which they contribute towards significant changes as feminist practitioners and contribute towards ethical and intellectual development through their activist projects. They also point out how this has helped them achieve job market success and enhanced their personal maturity in order to communicate in an effective manner.

They have the confidence to be engaged in a positive manner as world’s citizens and as students with the help of their interpersonal competencies and expansion of knowledge. According to them, students graduating from here are leaders in various fields such as Project Serve’s Alternative Spring Break, Students for Choice and Michigan Abortion Rights Action League, Domestic Violence Project/SAFE House, V-Day Campaign, Anti-War Action, Ozone House, Feminist Mentorship Program, Artemesia and Students Organizing for Economic Equality.

Women’s Studies Concentration is a major offered at the Women’s Studies in Michigan University which seeks to provide training for women in interdisciplinary methods and offers both theoretical and practical approach to feminist thinking. It also provides coursework that explores global and multicultural nature of scholarships in order to effectively encourage comparative thinking. The course also equips women with the ability to think in an analytical manner and provide supporting contexts and skills.
