Most parents and students don't realize that at the time of graduation and during commencement excitement, most of the students have lost their coverage in family plans. Any student over the age of 19, upon graduation, is most likely not covered any longer by the family plan and should seriously consider getting their own policy.
This is not new information, it has been hibernating at the back of everyone's mind and few if any insurance companies send out reminders that Susie, who is graduating in May, no longer qualifies for health or life insurance. It is a rude awakening but the only way to avoid such a shock is to make sure that Susie gets into a graduate school.
Many students graduate feeling elated and jubilant about finding a job in their chosen field only to wind up waiting tables or doing courier work. In these tough economic times, students cannot afford to have full coverage like that of their parents so they look into the most basic of accident coverage just in case they have a car accident requiring a hospital stay.
