In a recent study, many students do not bother to do their required readings and very few arrive at class prepared having done any homework whatsoever. As reported in USA Today, at Indiana University, a survey was taken and most students replied quite frankly that they did far less than what was required of them and they still garnered an A+.

Does this mean that the professors are not holding homework or readings accountable and merely assign them as extra work and busy work? Or are they just not interested as long as the students pass the quizzes and tests, essays and lab work? Students quickly learn the style of the professor and what they can do just to get by and stay under the radar.

One professor, from Northern Arizona University, set out to prove that students have a theory of how little it takes to study and perform in class. She took freshmen classes and lived in a dormitory and went to classes amongst her junior peers. It was very enlightening about how they took short cuts, barely studied and had all sorts of tricks to writing an essay. Now this professor hands out homework which is directly related to tests and makes her lectures tie into the testing as well. All the rest is wasted time and effort.

Students are much more ingenious and coy than ever before. They have so much technology at their hands and it all results in how little they have to do themselves for themselves. Very few receive low or failing marks if they simply show up in class, raise their arms during a lecture and jot a few notes down. The more often you ask questions and make a name for yourself, the higher the grade you are likely to receive.
