So, you know you want more money? Who doesn’t, right? However, in this case, you deserve more money from your present or prospective employer-because you work hard for it. So, how do you successfully approach this seemingly intimidating question to either secure a solid salary in a new job or boost your present salary in your present job? Here are the most successful tips to adhere to, to get yourself a better salary:
1. Make a list: First off-whether this is for a new or existing job-it is always wise to know your worth and be able to back this up with solid reasons. Before you approach your boss for an increase in salary, it’s a good idea to be prepared to tell them why you deserve more money. You will be selling yourself, and an employer doesn’t want to just give his/her money away for nothing. Prove yourself and your skills worthy.
2. Research, research, research: Another crucial action you should take before approaching your employer is research of your industry and position value in the area you live in. This will give you a better ground of understanding what other people in your position make and be able to use this as a solid reason why you deserve more money than you currently make or they may be willing to initially offer.
3. Know your range: Lastly, you should always have a minimum amount that you are willing to take and nothing less. If while in negotiation, your employer tells you that either they cannot give you your minimum raise amount or that your prospective employer cannot afford you your minimum as starting salary, you need to be able to stick to that. Knowing your limits salary-wise will not only help you prepare your living expenses and budget planning, but also give yourself a better idea of career self-worth.
