  • There was a time when the American Universities were popular all over the world for the kind of quality they offered as far as education was concerned. The overall skill levels of the teachers, the advanced facilities offered to the students and fantastic faculties were some of the prime reasons why these Universities were considered the best. Students from all over the world dreamt of studying in this part of the world.

Unfortunately, the domination of American Universities is steadily decreasing. According to many experts as well as educational administrators, the quality of higher education is on a decline. This is probably the biggest concern for many people across the country. However, many fail to understand the decrease in quality of education, especially when students are now paying a much higher tuition fee.

It is true that majority of students are paying tuition fees that have increased drastically in the past 4-5 years. Hence, it is natural for one to believe that the Universities are making more money. This also makes one feel that the quality of education should actually improve further.

However, what most of the people are not aware about is the drastic decrease in the overall funds given by the state to Universities. This decrease in the funds is much more as compared to the hike in tuition fees. The fact that Universities had to increase their fee is a clear indication that they are not getting enough funds from the states.

With rise in tuition fees, the enrollment has also suffered a great deal. Many students are hesitating from enrolling themselves for degree courses. This has led to more complications for Universities. With a fall in enrollment, there is a further decrease in funds. All this has led to cost cutting policies being developed in Universities.

There has hardly been any hike in the salaries of the teachers. The last 3-4 years have seen a number of teachers leave their respective jobs and try their hand in other professions. During this period a number of good and skilled teachers have left Universities.

Cost cutting is one of the prime reasons why Universities are not able to offer the kind of quality education that they once did. For the Universities to do well in terms of quality, they will have to get more funding from the states.

Currently, a hike in tuition fee is actually hurting the Universities more then it is hurting the students. Not many educational administrators are willing to accept this fact and majority of the parents certainly believe that the hike in tuition fee is a policy to make more profits.

Ideally speaking, this is the time when the states really need to focus on ways of increasing funds for Universities. It is safe to assume that they are already doing the needful. However, it is time now that funding increases and Universities as well as the students witness some respite.
