Personal counseling is available to all students through a group of professional counselors, Family Service of the Roanoke Valley. There is no fee for these services and regular office hours are conducted on campus. The main objective is to help students to achieve academic and personal goals as well as provide support during stressful times. To accomplish this, Counselors collaborate with a support network of staff and faculty from residence education, health center, chaplain’s office, academic support, and academic advising.
The focus of counseling services is on short-term, problem solving counseling. If a student is in need of long term therapy the Counselor will make a referral to a therapist for in depth, therapeutic counseling. Students are assured that all counseling services are confidential between the student and counselor unless the counselor believes that the student is an imminent danger to hurt her/himself or others. In such cases in the best interest of the student the counselor is obligated to involve others as appropriate.
