The Division of Neonatology & Newborn Nursery within the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) is seeking an academic Neonatologist to assume the role of Division Chief of Neonatology & Newborn Nursery. This is an opportunity for a full-time Professor or Associate Professor. We seek a servant-leader with enthusiasm for the academic medical environment. The Division Chief provides strategic and operational leadership, oversees divisional faculty and staff, spearheads the expansion of clinical, education, and research programs, and guides faculty professional development. This is an opportunity to teach and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows, thereby shaping the next generation of medical professionals. A physician-scientist with an active research program is ideal, but strong leadership skills are the most important quality.

The Division of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery promotes the health and well-being of newborns, whether they are critically ill, premature, or simply in need of special observation. The program works collaboratively with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine to assure a successful transition from the intrauterine environment. The division's mission includes education of trainees, opportunities for continuing education, and advancing the field through basic, clinical, and translational research. It oversees an active program in studying the use of simulation for training NICU providers, including mannikin, virtual reality, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and other creative teaching methods. Research interests include nutrition and iron metabolism in neonates, corticosteroid metabolites in extremely low birth weight neonates, chronic lung disease, neonatal vision, surfactant delivery methods for respiratory distress syndrome, perinatal brain injury, monitoring kidney function with near-infrared spectroscopy, guiding newborn resuscitation using telemedicine, and using artificial intelligence to enhance neonatal care. Its close partners include the UW Health Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center, whose experts care for unborn babies with fetal conditions during pregnancy, and Pediatric Cardiology, whose experts specialize in treating infants with complex congenital heart disease. The division participates in the Vermont Oxford Network, Children's Hospital Neonatal Consortium, and the Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care, further demonstrating the division's dedication to collaboration and continuous improvement in neonatal care.

The Department of Pediatrics is a vibrant academic department comprising more than 200 faculty members in 16 subspecialty divisions. The department promotes and enhances the health of children through outstanding clinical care, exemplary education of pediatric trainees, performance of cutting-edge research, and vigorous advocacy. Our faculty enjoy a robust infrastructure of services as well as the opportunity to contribute to our world-class $40.3M research portfolio since 2015, the Department of Pediatrics has ranked among the Top 20 pediatrics departments receiving NIH funding, according to Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.

    Responsibilities:
    - The Division Chief will provide strategic and operational servant-leadership with responsibility over the division's operations across all missions (clinical, teaching, research, and service). The position will develop, implement, and evaluate approaches to advance strategic priorities in all missions, as well as encourage faculty career progression according to the UW SMPH and UW-Madison Appointment and Promotion Criteria. The position will promote and support the advancement of a diverse faculty, on all tracks, and a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff.
    - Provide clinical care to patients at UW Health locations.
    - Carry out independent research/scholarly activity in an area of interest. Physician-scientists will be expected to engage in active collaborative research and expand clinical and/or translational research in the division and obtain/maintain independent extramural funding.
    - Teach to a variety of learners, including medical students, residents, and fellows.
