Primary Purpose of the Position
The Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) invites applications for a nine-month, full-time tenure track faculty position in the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning August 2025. Exceptional candidates with a proven record of scholarly achievement, research funding, and leadership will be considered for an endowed professorship.
Successful candidates will teach a variety of introductory and upper-division biology courses, which include General Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Histology, Genetics, and Molecular Biology. The teaching assignments will include undergraduate lectures and laboratory courses for biology majors, health sciences programs, nursing majors, and general education biology courses for non-majors. All candidates are expected to serve as academic advisors and mentors. The successful candidates will produce innovative scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline, present at professional conferences, and engage in procuring extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams. Service expectations include participation in departmental, College, and university service as well as engage in service to the professional discipline and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community.
The Department of Biological Sciences provides programs for students in Biology resulting in a Bachelor of Science degree. Biological Sciences also supports other schools/departments in the University with courses needed by their students. These include Health and Exercise Sciences, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Physical Therapy and Nursing.

We seek exceptional candidates who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching biological sciences to undergraduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The following qualifications and skills are required:
A Ph.D. in biology or related biological sciences (physiology, molecular biology) from an accredited graduate program
Demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate courses in biological sciences
A minimum of two years’ post-doctoral training experience
Experience using Canvas or a similar Learning Management System
Experience using emerging technologies in teaching and learning that engages students in the learning process
Illustrate evidence of designing a quality sustainable research program
Evidence of mentoring students in undergraduate research experiences and/or internships and service-learning opportunities
Demonstrate a record of peer-reviewed publications in biological sciences or demonstrate the potential for publishing scholarly work in peer-reviewed publications
Demonstrate research experience and the potential for attracting external funding
Demonstrate activities that show professional growth and development via engagement in professional organizations and professional conferences related to disciplines within biological sciences
Demonstrate the ability to participate in transdisciplinary teaching and research collaborations with colleagues at the university, across universities, or within the broader public
Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Have one year of experience in teaching undergraduate courses in biological sciences
Demonstrate prior experience teaching online and using Canvas or a similar Learning Management System
Experience with teaching in large class format
Experience in Effective student engagement (in person and online)
