  • Description:
  • Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking a full-time Mass Spectrometry Technologist to run LC-MS–based metabolomics workflows end-to-end—from sample handling and metabolite extraction to data acquisition, QC, and analysis. The position will support projects that emphasize stable isotope tracing, targeted metabolomics, untargeted metabolomics, and integrated untargeted isotope tracing across multiple research groups (Wilde and Dasgupta labs). Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of the world’s oldest cancer centers established in 1898, is known for numerous seminal basic science and translational discoveries in oncology. Roswell Park has state-of-the-art research infrastructure enabling all aspects of modern biomedical research – from discovery work towards clinical validation – and provides a highly stimulating academic and clinical environment. Salary: Competitive with full benefits What you’ll do • Handle biological materials (cells, tissues, plasma/serum, media) and extract metabolites using standardized protocols. • Operate, schedule, and maintain LC-MS instrumentation (daily checks, tuning/calibration, leak checks, source cleaning, column care) and coordinate vendor service. • Run samples across a variety of metabolomics applications (targeted panels, untargeted profiling, isotope tracing), track batches, maintain run logs, and implement rigorous QA/QC (pooled QCs, blanks, standards, carryover checks, drift monitoring). • Develop and optimize LC-MS methods for metabolite detection and quantification. • Process and analyze data using Python and R plus integrative tools such as MZmine, ProteoWizard/MSConvert, (optionally XCMS, MS-Dial, Skyline), and standard statistical/visualization workflows. • Document methods, QC reports, and SOPs and contribute data, figures, and text for manuscripts, grants, and presentations. • Collaborate closely with lab members to plan isotope-labeling experiments, refine designs, and deliver high-quality data. Qualifications • Hands-on LC-MS experience is essential. (We’re looking for someone who has actually run instruments, not just analyzed datasets.) • Degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or related field: B.S./B.A. with 2+ years of direct LC-MS experience, M.S. with 1+ year, or Ph.D. considered with strong bench instrumentation time. • Demonstrated proficiency in metabolite extraction from biological samples. • Familiarity with stable-isotope tracing design and data interpretation strongly preferred. • Working knowledge of QA/QC best practices for metabolomics (QCs, standards, batch correction). • Computational skills: Python and/or R for data wrangling, stats, and plotting; familiarity with MZmine, ProteoWizard/MSConvert, and XCMS/X13CMS are a bonus. • Strong communication, meticulous record-keeping, and comfort interacting with vendor technical support. What we offer • Competitive compensation and benefits at Roswell Park. • Opportunities for co-authorship on basic and translational studies. • A collaborative environment focused on rigorous science and mentorship. To apply: email your cover letter and CV to [email protected] with the subject line “Mass Spec Technologist — [Your Name]”. Please include a brief paragraph describing instruments you’ve operated, typical sample types, and your experience with isotope-labeling workflows.
