1. Register with the U.S. Department of State, the nearest U.S. embassy and the Consular Affairs Department.
2. Keep passports, cash, credit cards and travelers' checks locked away when not in use.
3. Make a photocopy of her passport in case it gets lost or stolen.
4. Avoid risky behaviors
5. Use marked taxis only.
6. Don't travel alone or take shortcuts.
7. Avoid being on the streets at night.

When you go out, you should definitely let someone know where you are going and when you are expected to return.

I think "Don't take shortcuts" is one of the more important tips. A lot of times streets and roadways look very similar and sometimes when you know where you are going because you recognize the streets and surroundings. Sometimes when you are in a foreign country, those streets and roadways look similar on every street. Taking shortcuts can get you easily lost in the city.
