1. Register with the U.S. Department of State, the nearest U.S. embassy and the Consular Affairs Department.

2. Keep passports, cash, credit cards and travelers' checks locked away when not in use.

3. Make a photocopy of her passport in case it gets lost or stolen.

4. Avoid risky behaviors

5. Use marked taxis only.

6. Don't travel alone or take shortcuts.

7. Avoid being on the streets at night.

Also, don't carry too much cash around. Many countries are notorious for pickpocketing.

Another point is don't bring over things that you will regret losing. for example, expensive laptop, musical instruments or cell phones.
