The first two years of the program are devoted to coursework in economic theory, mathematics, and quantitative methods.
Students write an original empirical paper with faculty guidance. The best paper wins the Hoos Prize and many of them have been published.
By the end of the third year students will present a research essay and take the oral examination. The remainder of the graduate program is devoted to writing the dissertation.

An applicant should hold a degree comparable to a Bachelor's degree at the University of California and must have demonstrated strong scholarship potential. The degree need not be in agricultural or resource economics.
