Doctoral Program
The doctoral degree in the School of Journalism is fundamentally a research degree, preparing students who will be productive researchers across their careers; this clearly implies that students must have a depth of knowledge about the content of the field and of the methods and methodologies to engage in research. The doctoral program prepares scholars to have a working knowledge of the scope of the field, a knowledge that encompasses a variety of approaches toward journalism and mass communication: An engaged scholar in the 21st century should be cognizant of qualitative, quantitative and critical perspectives, and of research at multiple levels of analysis. The graduate faculty in journalism believes that we owe our students, our field and our alumni the assurance that our graduate students have been rigorously educated and are able to profess and defend their positions at high levels of discourse and argument.
Journalism Master of Arts Program Tracks
Journalism shares much with the social sciences and humanities; both seek to analyze and report on the social world. Unlike those fields, however, journalism education trains students to enter a specific profession. We believe that a well-rounded and rigorous program of graduate study provides the best training for a professional communicator. In an era of rapid change, both in careers and the industry, we feel it is the best long-term investment for the student and helps improve, rather than simply perpetuate, current practices in the profession. Students can choose one of two tracks for the Master of Arts degree (M.A. degree) in journalism: the research and theory track or the professional track.
