The “Graduate Program†in this Department is a Ph.D. program. This is true even though those who enter our program without a Master’s degree are required to obtain one. The expectation is that you will continue after the Master’s and get your Ph.D. We therefore refer to the Master’s portion of the Graduate Program as your “Master’s Program,†and the post-Master’s portion as the “Doctoral Program.†Terminal Master’s are normally granted only in cases in which the student has completed all Master’s requirements and a decision is made not to continue in our Graduate Program.
The Psychology Department is divided into six Program Groups. These are:
1. Behavioral Neuroscience
2. Clinical
3. Cognition & Cognitive Neuroscience
4. Ecological / Community
5. Organizational
6. Social / Personality
Each Program Group has a chairperson who is chosen every couple of years by the Program Group members. The Department maintains an up-to-date list of Program Group chairs and members.
Interdepartmental Programs:
- Infant Studies
- Neuroscience
- Cognitive Science
- Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, & Behavior Program
- Gender, Justice & Environmental Change
- African Studies
- Global Urban Studies
- Admission Information:
-
The faculty and graduate students in the various fields of concentration offered in our department are organized into Graduate Programs. Admission recommendations are made by program groups. The faculty or a faculty committee from a particular program group review the credentials of all applicants indicating a primary interest in that field of concentration. If the faculty committee thinks that its program cannot offer the training that a particular applicant seeks, admission may be denied even though the applicant's other credentials might be very strong. Occasionally, an applicant's file will be reviewed by more than one program group. This usually occurs when an applicant has indicated interest in one area on the application but expresses different interests in the personal statement that is required with the application.
Interviews. In general, we do not use personal interviews as part of the selection process. However, individuals applying to the clinical psychology program may be invited to interview at some point in the review process. If, as a prospective applicant, you wish to make an appointment with a member of our faculty, please contact that person directly.
The following is some information you may want to gather for the application process:
GRE Scores and the date you took it
GPA for undergrad and any graduate school
List of classes you've taken
List of references and their email addresses
Your personal statement

Although we offer M.A. and Ph.D. degree programs, we have no terminal programs at the M.A. level. Our M.A. programs are not intended to provide an entry point for professional employment in psychology.
Graduate degree programs in the Department of Psychology are offered only within the College of Social Science. Our affiliation with other colleges includes research and teaching links, but no degrees in psychology are available outside the College of Social Science. Descriptions of our programs appear in "Academic Programs", a catalog published on-line by Michigan State University.
Most successful applicants are admitted with some sort of financial support. Support sources come in five main types:
Teaching assistantships eligible to join the Graduate Employees Union (TA)
Teaching assistantships not eligible to join the Graduate Employees Union (TE)
Research assistantships (RA)
MSU fellowships (e.g., University Distinguished Fellowships, University Enrichment Fellowships)
External fellowships (e.g., from the National Science Foundation)
If you are offered admission to our program, you will be told whether you will be on a fellowship or some type of assistantship. We make every effort to support our graduate students during their program.
