  • Technology messing up student's lives?

  • Gone are the days when we did our home works and assignments on paper. We would spend hours at the library pouring over scores of books and making sure that our assignment was good enough. However, this is not the case any more due to the fact that today there are computers to replace the paper and pencil.

In fact we are so engrossed and enamoured my personal computers and laptops that we just cannot do without them. Schools and colleges allow students to carry their laptops to class to enable them to work on them right away. It is not uncommon today to find students walking around with their laptop even while they are on their school vacation.

Chatting via the webcam and voice chatting is the norm today. What goes on the web is more like a mystery that needs unravelling. And this is what happened on a recent school trip for a particular bunch of kids from the Horace Maan School in New York.

Master Nass, a 10th grader from the school was a part of the sixty students group who went to the Junior state of America convention in Arlington. But due to a snow storm on the second day, students could not move out of their hotel rooms. And being kids, they all piled up inone room and happened to open Nass’s laptop. The boy in question however had dozed off and had no clue of what was going on.

Nass had previously got talking to a girl from the school. They were sort of dating online and that is when she happened to lose her top on the webcam. This the boy had saved along with many other chats. And when the laptop was opened by his classmates, all the beans were spilled. Soon at least 40 other students were glued to this laptop. And the girl in question was of course livid. The situation went so out of hand that she had to inform her parents. To her consternation, Nass had failed to keep his promise while on the other hand the boy never meant to show it to any of his friends.

The school, when they found out, suspended the boy for three days and the worst part is that this suspension would reflect in his final results which would affect his higher education. His parents have filed a law suit against the school stating a lot of reasons as to why it is not fair for their son to be suspended.

They argue that the girl had consented to what happened over the webcam. The boy never meant to show it to anyone. And if only the other students had not opened his laptop without his permission, this would have never happened. Nass's parents further argue that the teacher who was supposed to look after them had gone drinking so there was no supervision and this is wrong on the part of the school. They have stated various other reasons in a bid to ensure justice for their son.

How many parents would be able to do this when something goes wrong this way? Technology is good but it should not be misused.
